- Understanding the Fraud Mindset
Alex Wood is a keynote speaker, fraud expert and former cybercriminal who provides a unique insight into the mindset of criminals, fraud prevention, cybercrime and social engineering. Drawing on an extraordinary personal journey from international concert violinist to convicted criminal and ultimately, respected counter-fraud professional, Alex delivers powerful and thought-provoking keynote speeches that challenge audiences to think differently about fraud and financial crime.
From International Violinist to Cybercriminal
Alex's early career was spent in the music industry. From the age of 13, he toured internationally as a violin soloist, performing under some of the greatest conductors of the modern era.
He was awarded prestigious scholarships to the Purcell School, the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music, winning numerous prizes along the way. His performances also took him regularly to Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
At just 24, Alex's music career was abruptly brought to an end by repetitive strain injury (RSI) in his right hand. Faced with mounting debts and no source of income, his life took a dramatic turn and he entered the world of crime.
What followed was a remarkable descent into criminality, eventually resulting in several years in prison for a range of dishonesty offences from impersonating the 13th Duke of Marlborough to involvement in multi-million-pound cybercrime.
Today, Alex uses those experiences for a very different purpose: helping organisations understand how criminals think, how sophisticated fraud is perpetrated, and how people and businesses can better protect themselves.
A Leading Voice in Counter-Fraud
Since his release from prison in 2022, Alex has established himself as a powerful and distinctive voice within the counter-fraud profession.
His keynote presentations provide audiences with an unparalleled perspective on the fraud mindset, social engineering, cybercrime, financial crime and the psychology behind criminal behaviour.
Alex has spoken at major public-sector and financial crime events, including:
-
CounterFraud 2023, organised by the Cabinet Office, GovNet and the Public Sector Fraud Authority
-
The London Boroughs' Fraud Investigators' Group (LBFIG) AGM, hosted at Pinsent Masons
-
The National Investigations Conference (NICONF23) in Birmingham, where he delivered Inside the Mind of a Criminal
- The Local Authority Financial Investigators Forum, where he explored subjects including social engineering and underworld banking
His speaking engagements have also extended beyond the public sector to leading global financial institutions, including Tier 1 banks, insurance providers, law firms and risk specialists such as Experian.
Understanding the Fraud Mindset
What makes Alex's keynotes different is his first-hand experience of criminal behaviour.
Rather than discussing fraud purely from an investigative, academic or theoretical perspective, Alex offers audiences an insider's view of how criminals identify opportunities, manipulate victims, exploit weaknesses and use social engineering techniques to achieve their objectives.
His presentations can help organisations better understand:
- The Psychology and Mindset of Fraudsters
- Social Engineering and Manipulation Techniques
- How Cybercriminals Exploit People and Processes
- The Changing Nature of Financial and Cybercrime
- Criminal Networks and Underworld Banking
- How Fraudsters Identify Vulnerabilities Within Organisations
- Practical Approaches to Fraud Prevention and Counter-Fraud
- The Risks Associated with Money Mule Activity
Alex combines compelling storytelling with professional insight, making his keynotes highly relevant to banks, financial institutions, government departments, law enforcement, insurers, professional services firms and organisations responsible for fraud and risk management.
Tackling Money Mule Recruitment
Alex is also working with leading financial institutions, lawyers, police forces and government stakeholders on a national strategy designed to educate children about the dangers of becoming involved in money mule activity.
His work aims to raise awareness of how young people can be targeted by criminal networks and help prevent them from becoming involved in financial crime.
From Prison to Keynote Speaker
Alex's extraordinary life story has attracted significant attention beyond the counter-fraud sector.
While serving his prison sentence, he was signed by world-leading literary agent Andrew Lownie, and his story is now the subject of a major documentary in production by multi-award-winning filmmakers Chris Atkins and Louis Theroux's Mindhouse Productions.
Today, Alex Wood brings together an extraordinary combination of experiences: international musician, convicted criminal, cybercrime insider, fraud expert and keynote speaker.
His unique perspective gives audiences an opportunity to see fraud and cybercrime from the other side inside the mind of a criminal.
