Whether she is discussing the intricacies of international football or promoting the need for gender, racial and LGBT+ equality in sport, Anita Asante is a force to be reckoned with. The sportsperson and seasoned academic uses her voice to open doors for minority groups, as an Ambassador for Show Racism the Red Card and Amnesty International UK. Since retiring from international football, Anita has dedicated her time to presenting roles on the BBC and Sky Sports, increasing representation in a male-dominated sport , as well as being a columnist in The Guardian and a regular contributor to the Womens' Football Newsletter Moving the Goalposts.
Having made 75 appearances for England and Great Britain, Anita continues to be one of the most recognisable faces in football. She has played for the likes of Arsenal, which whom she won the FA Cup and Premier League, WPS Champions Sky Blue, and FC Rosengård, winners of the 2017 Swedish Super Cup. A testament to her skill and determination, Anita has played in and won nearly all the UK’s major football competitions, with both Chelsea and Arsenal.
In 2007, Anita was part of a history-defining Arsenal squad, who were the first team aside from the mighty Germany and Scandinavia to win the UEFA Women’s Cup. From there, she continued her domination of the sport, travelling across the Atlantic to win the 2009 US WPS Championship with Sky Blue. Moving back to Europe, this time with Swedish team FC Rosengård, Anita won the 2014 and 2015 Damallsvenskan League. A pinnacle moment in Anita’s career, was her Olympic debut. Kicking off the 2012 London Olympic Games, where she took part on the first-ever women’s team - Anita is credited for Great Britain’s success. In 2020, Anita signed with Aston Villa, after winning the WSL and Continental Cup with Chelsea. She is certainly showing no signs of slowing down, making now the best time to book this rising giant of football.
Aside from her sporting career, Anita is also completing her PhD in the Governorship of Women’s Football, reflecting her commitment to the representation of female athletes. As a commentator, she regularly applies her vast knowledge to pinnacle matches and discusses the events of women’s sport. Upon being appointed an Ambassador for Show Racism the Red Card, she has further raised awareness for discrimination in football, a key topic of her speeches. From high-performance teamwork to equality, Anita’s experience of thriving in a male-dominated world serves to inspire and educate audiences at events.
