Armando Iannucci OBE is acclaimed as one of the most influential comedy writers, directors and producers in Britain. His portfolio of work is extensive, spanning radio, film and television, and includes writing/directing the BAFTA-winning BBC TV comedy shows I'm Alan Partridge (starring Steve Coogan) and The Thick Of It (BBC4), and fronting his own satirical shows The Friday Night Armistice (BBC2) and The Armando Iannucci Show (Channel 4).
Armando first came to prominence as the writer and producer of the British Comedy Award-winning spoof news programme The Day Today (starring Chris Morris), which aired on BBC2 in 1991-1992. Then, after championing Yes Minister on the BBC's Britain's Best Sitcom review, he devised, directed - and was chief writer of - The Thick of It, a political satire-cum-farce for BBC4, first broadcast in 2005.
The premise and storyline of The Thick Of It subsequently became the basis for Armando's first feature film In the Loop - which he directed and co wrote (with Jesse Armstrong). The film is a fast-paced comedy drama about Britain and America's 'special relationship' in the lead-up to a war no one seems to be able to stop. Starring Peter Capaldi and James Gadolfini, it received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 82nd Academy Awards in 2010.
Armando also devised Veep, an American Home Box Office (HBO) political comedy TV series, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The seriesgarnered critical acclaim, and has been nominated four years in a row for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series, winning the Award for its fourth season, which screened in 2015.
Often appearing on television as a commentator, on shows such as The Daily Politics, This Week and Question Time, Armando also has extensive experience within the corporate sector, where his stylish, sharp sense of humour and knowledge of the media industry makes him ideal for many events, ranging from hosting a political debate to giving an amusing After-dinner Speech about TV and film. In addition, Armando has delivered the Alternative McTaggart Lecture at the Edinburgh TV Festival, given a series of lectures on Television Comedy and New Media as Visiting Professor of Broadcast Media at Oxford University, been a Guest Director of The Cheltenham Literary Festival, and Chair of the Judges for the Costa Book Award.
