Ben Hunte

  • Global Correspondent for VICE News
  • BBC’s first LGBT Correspondent
  • One of UK's most recognisable LGBTQ Broadcasters

Ben Hunte, a Global Correspondent for VICE News, investigates stories worldwide focusing on LGBTQ issues, race, and inequality. Formerly the BBC’s pioneering LGBTQ Correspondent and West Africa Correspondent, he has garnered recognition for his impactful journalism.

In 2023, Ben's dedication to shedding light on transphobia within the Equality and Human Rights Commission earned him the prestigious Out D’or Foreign Press Award in France. Prior to this recognition, he was lauded in 2022 as a member of Forbes 30 Under 30, and in 2020, he claimed the top spot in The Guardian and DIVA Magazine’s revered Pride Power List.

With a strong track record in original journalism across online platforms, TV, and radio, Ben has uncovered numerous viral stories, including the UK’s Equalities Minister's Kemi Badenoch, going on an “anti-LGBTQ rant” in 2018, and then sending messages saying, “I don’t care about colonialism”. Ben later revealed how the minister encouraged city firms to block their trans inclusion policies. Ben’s award-winning investigative series looking into the Equality and Human Rights Commission made headlines across the UK and received several mentions in UK parliament.  His investigations into issues like conversion therapy and LGBTQ suicides have prompted policy changes.

Before his journalism career, Ben worked as a Strategy Manager at Google and maintained a successful YouTube channel. He holds an Alumni Laureate Award from the University of Nottingham, where he studied Neuroscience on a scholarship.

Ben's multifaceted career trajectory also includes a stint as a BBC News Africa presenter, where he traversed the continent, crafting compelling content for global audiences across television, radio, and social media platforms. His journey exemplifies a steadfast commitment to advocacy, storytelling, and amplifying marginalized voices on a global scale.
