Highly successful entrepreneur and Dragons’ Den investor Deborah Meaden knew she wanted to build her own business from a young age. After leaving school following her O-Levels, she studied at business college and, at just 19, launched her first venture, a glass and ceramics import company that supplied luxury retailers such as Harvey Nichols.

Although the business faced challenges with product exclusivity, Deborah’s entrepreneurial spirit never wavered. She went on to explore other ventures, including a franchise with Italian fashion brand Stefanel and running a prize bingo concession at Butlins.

🚀 Rising Through the Ranks in Leisure & Tourism

Deborah’s next major step came when she joined her family’s amusement arcade business, starting on the shop floor before becoming Operations Director. She later moved into the company’s holiday park division, Weststar Holidays, where her leadership quickly shone through.

Within just two years, Deborah became Managing Director, transforming Weststar into a thriving business offering high-quality UK family holidays to over 150,000 guests each year.

💰 The Weststar Holidays Success Story

In 1999, determined to take control of her future, Deborah completed a management buyout of Weststar Holidays, securing funding from Lloyds Bank. Her newly formed group, TGGL, saw rapid growth and investment, with Weststar achieving strong occupancy rates and standing out in a competitive marketplace.

By 2005, Weststar had attracted major investor interest, leading to a £33 million sale to Phoenix Equity Partners. Deborah retained a 23% stake and continued to play an active role until selling her remaining shares when Parkdean Holidays acquired the company for £83 million.
