  • ‘Tommo’ - Legendary Racing Commentator & Host
  • Horse Racing Broadcaster & Speaker
  • VOG & Voice Over Artist

Derek ‘Tommo’ Thompson is one of the most recognisable names in British horse racing. Widely known as “the voice of horseracing”, his unmistakable baritone and infectious personality have made him a favourite with racing fans for decades. A charismatic broadcaster, accomplished presenter and highly entertaining after-dinner speaker, Tommo brings humour, energy and remarkable stories to every event.

With a career spanning more than 50 years, Tommo has presented, commentated and hosted major racing events across the globe. His journey began at the age of 15 when his father unexpectedly handed him the microphone midway through a point-to-point race. From that moment, he knew broadcasting was his future.

Tommo quickly rose through the ranks to become the youngest-ever commentator on the Grand National, calling Red Rum’s historic first victory in 1973. Over the years, he has voiced some of racing’s most iconic moments, including Dubai Millennium and Frankie Dettori’s triumph in the 2000 Dubai World Cup, as well as Frankel’s sensational debut victory at Newmarket.

Alongside his broadcasting success, Tommo also enjoyed life in the saddle as an amateur jockey and successful showjumper. One of his most talked-about victories came when he famously beat the then Prince Charles in a charity race at Plumpton. However, broadcasting was always his true calling.

His career progressed from local radio to BBC Radio before joining ITV’s World of Sport and later Channel 4 Racing in 1981. Tommo also presented and commentated at three Olympic Games and became the pioneering voice of Dubai Racing after being personally invited by Sheikh Mohammed in 1994 to help launch racing coverage in the emirate.

A true trailblazer in sports broadcasting, Tommo is regarded as one of the original horseracing influencers. Renowned for his exceptional live interviewing skills, he has interviewed hundreds of celebrities, sporting icons and members of the Royal Family, including Ronnie Corbett and Robbie Williams.

Beyond the racecourse, Tommo’s life has included extraordinary and dramatic moments. He became heavily involved in negotiations during the infamous kidnapping of Derby-winning racehorse Shergar, after being approached by those responsible for the crime. His gripping account of the ordeal in Belfast remains one of the most compelling stories in racing history.

In 2012, Tommo faced his greatest personal challenge when he was diagnosed with colon cancer. In true Tommo fashion, he postponed urgent treatment so he could witness Frankel’s unforgettable 11-length victory in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. Following intensive chemotherapy and serious complications, he fought back courageously and was declared cancer-free a year later. His inspiring journey is documented in his book,  "Too Busy To Die".

In 2025, Tommo stepped away from mainstream race commentary in the UK, although he continues as the commentator for Jersey Racecourse. Far from retiring, he remains in high demand as an event host, motivational speaker and racing presenter at charity functions, corporate events and race meetings across the country.

Today, Tommo lives in North Yorkshire with his wife Caroline and their racehorses. Combining sporting history, humour, resilience and unforgettable storytelling, Derek ‘Tommo’ Thompson continues to captivate audiences wherever he appears.
