Dominique De Villepin

A champion of worldwide peace and justice, Dominique de Villepin is a former French Prime Minister and a foremost advocate of global governance based on multilateralism. He came into the international spotlight when, as a French Foreign Minister, he opposed the 2003 invasion of Iraq, a stance that culminated in a heartfelt speech to the UN.

Dominique was born in Morocco but grew up in South America. Being familiar with both the Northern and Southern hemispheres, he is keen to build bridges between these two worlds. He is an advocate for the defence of identity and the dialogue of cultures, both of which he sees as indispensable requirements for peace and stability.

During the French government's cabinet reshuffle in March 2004 - which made Nicolas Sarkozy the Finance Minister - Dominique was appointed to replace him as Interior Minister. In May of the following year, President Jacques Chirac appointed Dominique as France's Prime Minister.

A multi-linguist who speaks French, English and Spanish, Dominique does not confine himself to the world of politics - he has also written about poetry, and several historical and political essays, along with a study of Napoleon Bonaparte.

In 2000, Dominique awarded the Grand Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.
