He has been described by the BBC as "arguably the greatest player ever to don a Welsh jersey." In recognition of his immense contributions to sport, Gareth was awarded a CBE in 2007.

🌄 From Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen to Global Rugby Fame

Born the son of a miner in the Welsh village of Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen, near Port Talbot, Gareth Edwards made his international debut for Wales at just 19 years old. He celebrated his 21st birthday on his first British & Irish Lions Tour to South Africa—an early milestone in a career that would become legendary.

Between 1967 and 1978, Gareth earned 53 caps for Wales, captaining the national side 13 times, and becoming an icon of both Welsh and international rugby.

🏆 A Fitting Finale to a Legendary Career

Gareth’s international career concluded in March 1978, fittingly against France—the same opponent from his debut match. Wales triumphed 16–7 at Cardiff Arms Park, a perfect send-off for a remarkable career. That same year, Gareth was named Rothmans Player of the Year 1978, cementing his place among the sport’s elite.

Beyond the rugby pitch, Gareth became a household name in the UK, serving as a team captain on the BBC’s iconic quiz show A Question of Sport for four years, alongside football legend Emlyn Hughes.
