Gavin Esler

Gavin Esler is best known for being the main presenter of BBC Two's highly respected news analysis programme, Newsnight, a position he held for over a decade, from January 2003 until January 2014. He then became deputy presenter of the BBC's News at Five, as well as a presenter on the BBC News Channel. Gavin is also the main presenter of the BBC's weekly news discussion programme Dateline London and its Scottish equivalent Dateline Scotland.

Gavin began his career on the Belfast Telegraph in 1976, joining the BBC as a Northern Ireland reporter the following year. His aptitude for news reporting led to a rapid rise through the BBC's ranks, becoming Washington correspondent and then Chief North America correspondent, covering the administrations of both George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He was awarded a Royal Television Award for his report on the military build-up in the Aleutian Islands during the Reagan administration’s 'New Maritime Strategy'.

In addition to his TV appearances, Gavin writes regular columns for several publications, including The Scotsman and The Independent, and he has also written three novels: Loyalties, Deep Blue and The Blood Brother.
