Sir Kevin Sinfield is one of rugby league’s most respected figures, celebrated for an outstanding playing career, inspirational leadership and extraordinary commitment to charitable causes. A legendary Leeds Rhinos player turned coach, leader and campaigner, Kevin brings decades of experience in high-performance environments to his work as a motivational speaker.

His career offers a powerful combination of elite sport, leadership, resilience, teamwork and purpose. From captaining Leeds Rhinos to major honours to undertaking extraordinary endurance challenges in support of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) awareness, Kevin’s story demonstrates what can be achieved through determination, courage and a commitment to others.

A Legendary Rugby League Career

Kevin Sinfield began his rugby journey with Waterhead ARLFC, a club renowned for developing talented players. His potential was quickly recognised and, in 1997, he joined Leeds RLFC. Remarkably, Kevin made his senior debut against the Sheffield Eagles at just 16 years old.

Over the years that followed, he established himself as one of the defining players of the Super League era. Kevin spent the vast majority of his professional career with Leeds, becoming synonymous with the club and playing a pivotal role in its success.

His achievements on the pitch included representing England on the international stage and competing in some of rugby league’s biggest fixtures. He featured during the 2000 Rugby League World Cup, including England’s emphatic victory over Russia, in which he scored three tries. His international career continued through the 2001 Kangaroo Tour and subsequent major England and club fixtures.

Leadership Beyond the Pitch

Following his retirement as a professional player, Kevin continued to contribute to rugby at the highest level. He moved into performance and leadership roles with the Rugby Football League, helping shape England’s performance strategy with a focus on developing the national team ahead of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

His leadership experience has also extended into coaching and rugby management, including his role with Leeds Rhinos. Having experienced elite sport as a player, captain and performance leader, Kevin understands the demands of building high-performing teams and creating an environment where individuals can achieve their potential.

A Remarkable Commitment to MND Awareness

Away from rugby, Kevin Sinfield has become internationally recognised for his extraordinary fundraising efforts for Motor Neurone Disease.

His motivation was deeply personal. His close friend and former Leeds teammate Rob Burrow was diagnosed with MND, inspiring Kevin to use his profile and physical endurance to raise awareness and vital funds for research and support.

Kevin famously completed seven ultra-marathons in seven days, raising around £2.7 million for MND-related causes. He subsequently undertook further demanding endurance challenges, including running the Leeds Marathon while pushing Rob Burrow's wheelchair before carrying his friend across the finish line.

His fundraising efforts helped generate millions of pounds for MND research, awareness and facilities, including the campaign for the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease in Leeds.

Following Rob's death in June 2024, Kevin continued to champion his friend's legacy and the wider MND community.

Honours and Recognition

Kevin's contribution to rugby and his charitable work have earned widespread recognition. He was appointed an MBE in the 2014 Birthday Honours for services to rugby and later received an OBE. In 2024, he was appointed a CBE for his services to MND awareness.

In the 2026 King's Birthday Honours, Kevin was awarded a knighthood in recognition of his contribution to rugby and his remarkable work raising awareness of Motor Neurone Disease. He has also received the Freedom of the City of Leeds.
