Professor Robert Winston is a medical scientist specialising in genetics and gynaecology, well known to British audiences through his many appearances on TV and radio programmes, especially those with a medical theme.
Robert joined Hammersmith Hospital as a registrar in 1970. He was Associate Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, in 1975, and a scientific advisor to the World Health Organisation's programme in human reproduction from 1975 to 1977. He subsequently joined The Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London as a Consultant.
After conducting research as Professor of Gynaecology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1980, Robert returned to the UK to set up the in vitro fertilisation (IVF) service at Hammersmith Hospital. He was subsequently Dean of the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology until its merger with Imperial College in 1997. During this period, Robert helped develop pioneering techniques in IVF and pre-implantation diagnosis.
Robert currently runs research at the Institute of Reproductive And Developmental Biology at Imperial College London, aiming to improve human transplantation.
As well as contributing to significant advancements in medical science, Robert has presented many BBC television series, including Your Life In Their Hands, Making Babies, Superhuman, The Secret Life Of Twins, Child Of Our Time, Human Instinct, The Human Mind, Frontiers Of Medicine and the BAFTA award-winning The Human Body.
Robert also presented The Story Of God, exploring the development of religious beliefs and the status of faith in a scientific age, as well as the BBC documentary Walking With Cavemen.
In addition, Robert has appeared on numerous TV chat shows and panel shows, such as Have I Got News For You, This Morning, The One Show, and various political programmes like Question Time and Any Questions.
Robert has written over 300 scientific papers in peer review journals, as well as over 20 books, including What Makes Me Me, Utterly Amazing Science, That’s Life, Utterly Amazing Body and The Essential Fertility Guide.
Made a peer in 1995, Robert speaks regularly at the House of Lords on education, science, medicine and the arts. He was a recipient of The British Medical Association Gold Award For Medicine In The Media in 1999.
