Lord (Stuart) Rose

One of the most prominent figures in UK retail, Stuart Rose was formerly Chairman and Chief Executive of Marks and Spencer and is now Chairman of online retailer Ocado.

During his seven years at the helm of Marks and Spencer, Lord Rose (formerly Sir Stuart Rose) helped to revive the once struggling retailer. Using his business acumen, vision, enthusiasm and determination, he was able to win the respect of his rivals and the support of not only his colleagues, but of the general public. His leadership truly transformed Marks and Spencer’s fortunes; once a mainstay of the British high street known for product quality, the brand had been in decline. Rose quickly established what customers wanted and then made it happen. He created a company ahead of the competition in terms of environmental sustainability and ethical practices, introduced new product lines and brought a new sense of dynamism and energy to the brand, pleasing existing customers and winning new ones in the process.

Knighted in 2008 for services to the retail industry, Rose was created a life peer in 2014 and took a seat on the Conservative Benches in the House of Lords. Also in 2014 he was recruited to advise the Government on turning around failing hospitals, asked to examine how to improve the organisational culture in under-performing hospitals and ways to recruit talent from inside and outside the NHS.

Lord Rose spent time in Tanzania as a child where his father was a civil servant, he is now a kind supporter of the Mvumi secondary school there, where his generous donations to Mvumi have funded the Rose Scholarships, the Harry Rose House hostel and the school's fresh water bore hole.
