Robert Peston is a much respected political commentator, both in the press and on television. Currently the Political Editor of ITV News and host of ITV's weekly political discussion show Peston on Sunday, he was formerly the Business Editor for BBC News.
Robert briefly worked as a stockbroker at Williams de Broe before becoming a journalist in 1983, initially at the Investors Chronicle, subsequently joining The Independent on its launch in 1986, moving on to become City Editor of The Independent On Sunday in 1990. From 1991 to 2000, he worked for the Financial Times. In 2000, he became a contributing editor of The Spectator and also began writing a weekly columnist for The Daily Telegraph, eventually switch allegiance to the Sunday Times, where he wrote a weekly business profile, Peston's People. In 2002, he joined The Sunday Telegraph as City editor and assistant editor, and became associate editor in 2005.
In 2005, Robert succeeded Jeff Randall as BBC Business Editor, responsible for business and City coverage on the corporation's flagship TV and radio news programmes, the BBC News Channel, its website and on Radio 4's Today programme.
Notable amongst the many influential financial/economy news stories that Robert has broadcast and written about was his up-to-the minute reporting on the global financial crisis that began in 2008. It was Robert who revealed that Northern Rock was close to technical insolvency and had approached the Bank of England for emergency support - this was the beginning of a chain of events in the banking sector which affected the entire world economy. He has since presented Super Rich: The Greed Game (BBC2), outlining the causes and consequences of the Credit Crunch.
Robert has also written and presented a number of in-depth documentaries, including How China Fooled The World, The Great Chinese Crash?, The Great Euro Crash, Quelle Catastrophe! France, and the popular series Robert Peston Goes Shopping.
Robert is the author of a number of books with economic/political themes, including Brown's Britain, Who Runs Britain?, How The Super-Rich Are Changing Our Lives and How Do We Fix This Mess?
Robert has won numerous awards, including Journalist Of The Year, Specialist Journalist Of The Year and Scoop Of The Year (twice) from the Royal Television Society, Performer Of The Year from the Broadcasting Press Guild and Broadcaster Of The Year and Journalist Of The Year from the Wincott Foundation.
