"Really brilliant. Very well received. Affable, warm, engaging and friendly. Really threw himself into it - including singing karaoke with the band, which went down a storm. Very impressed and very pleased indeed"
Sir Geoff Hurst is a former England international footballer, best known as the man that scored the third goal when England famously beat West Germany at Wembley in 1966. Geoff’s was the goal that coincided with a pitch invasion and prompted the commentator’s historic phrase They Think It’s All Over…It Is Now!
As a teenager, Geoff was obsessed with football and was once fined £1 for disturbing the peace after consistently kicking a football into his neighbour's garden. His career in football began in earnest when he was apprenticed to West Ham United at just 15 years of age. Manager Ted Fenton first selected him for a senior game in a Southern Flotlight Cup tie with Fulham in December 1958. Geoff turned professional at the club four months later, and was paid £7 a week with a £20 signing-on fee.
While at West Ham, Geoff won the FA Cup in 1964 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1965. He was sold to Stoke City in 1972 for £80,000. After three seasons with Stoke, he finished his Football League career with West Bromwich Albion in 1976. He went on to play football for Cork Celtic in Ireland and then for the Seattle Sounders in the USA, before returning to England to manage non-league Telford United.
In total, Geoff scored 24 goals in 49 England appearances; as well as success in the 1966 World Cup, he also took part in the UEFA Euro 1968 and the 1970 FIFA World Cup.
In 2003, Geoff's image became part of The Champions, a statue of the 1966 World Cup winning footballers by sculptor Philip Jackson. It sits at the junctions of Barking Road and Central Park Road, Newham, London, near to West Ham United's Boleyn Ground. In addition, a new statue of Geoff Hurst by Sculpture For Sport was unveiled outside local club Curzon Ashton in December 2010.
Geoff was awarded an MBE in 1977 and 21 years later he was knighted for over 30 years of service to football. He was inducted in the English Football Hall of Fame in 2004 and in 2009 football fans across the UK voted for him to receive the Lifetime Achievement award at the International Football Awards.
As Director of Football for McDonalds UK, Geoff has helped create 10,000 new football coaches, coaching children across the UK.
