Sonia Sodha is a respected columnist, author and broadcaster, best known for her sharp and thought-provoking commentary on politics, economics and social issues. A regular contributor to The Guardian and The Observer, where she previously served as Chief Leader Writer, Sonia brings a rare combination of policy expertise and journalistic insight to the national conversation.

Sonia describes herself as “half-Hindu, half-Sikh Indian” and was raised in the UK. She attended an independent school before reading Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at St Hilda’s College, Oxford, later completing an MPhil in Politics. Her early involvement in politics included serving as President of the Oxford University Liberal Democrats in 2001.

Her career began in public policy, where she held research and strategy roles at leading think tanks including the Social Market Foundation, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) and Demos. She went on to become Head of Policy and Strategy at the Dartington Social Research Unit, concentrating on education, public services and social mobility. Sonia’s expertise also led her to work as a senior adviser to Ed Miliband during his time as Leader of the Opposition, contributing to key initiatives on banking reform and public service innovation.

Sonia is a familiar face and voice across British broadcast media. She appears regularly on BBC Question Time, Newsnight, Sky News, BBC Radio 4’s Today programme and ITV’s This Morning, offering articulate and balanced analysis on the issues shaping the UK and beyond. She has also presented a number of acclaimed BBC Radio 4 documentaries exploring themes such as multiculturalism, participatory democracy and the future of work.

Beyond journalism, Sonia is deeply committed to social equity and public impact. She has served as a trustee for organisations including City Year UK and Trust for London, both dedicated to tackling inequality and supporting underrepresented communities. Her work consistently challenges audiences to think critically, making her one of the UK’s most influential voices in current affairs.
