Sue grew up in Croydon and attended Croham Hurst School, an independent girls’ school in South Croydon, before studying English at New Hall, Cambridge. During her time at Cambridge, she became a member of the Footlights, a prestigious comedy club, where she met Mel Giedroyc and was elected Footlights president in the academic year, a role that helped launch her career in comedy.

Sue and Mel gained recognition in the 1990s, performing at the Edinburgh Festival and writing for French & Saunders.
